Father of Kurt, who killed by a police bullet: We are hopeful, we want equality 2025-09-17 11:15:49   ÊLIH - Ömer Kurt, the father of Şerzan Kurt, a university student who was murdered with a police bullet, stated that they are hopeful for the Peace and Democratic Society Process and said: "A condition where everyone is equal should be created."   Initiated with the aim of solving the Kurdish issue, The Peace and Democratic Society Process is being supported the most by the families who lost their children during the conflict. The family of Şerzan Kurt (21) is among the families who fully support the process.    Şerzan Kurt was shot by the poliçe during the protests against racist attacks against Kurdish students at Muğla University and lost his life on 19 May 2010.    Father Ömer Kurt stated that the truth must be confronted in order to build an honourable peace. Stating that the perpetrators of the crimes against civilians should be revealed, Kurt said: "The state is conducting a policy of Turkification. In the first constitution of the Republic, Turks, Kurds, Arabs, Circassians came together and acted with a pluralist understanding. Afterwards, everything was turned upside down. They marginalised Kurds and communists."     Kurt said that they have great expectations from the process, but they also have hesitations. "For years, Kurds have acted in line with equal identity, equal culture and a pluralist system in which everyone can see themselves. The organisation has fulfilled the duties assigned to it. But the state has been very slow on this issue. They can take a decision in the parliament and give up the hostage situation of ill prisoners. They need to reassure this people," he said.   Pointing out that Turkey's threats against North and East Syria damage the process, Kurt said: “We are hopeful fort his peace period. Everyone should embrace it. Turks rather than Kurds should embrace it.”    Kurt concluded: "A free conditions must be created where everyone is equal, where no one oppresses anyone and where they can receive education in their mother tongue. We must protect the will for peace put forward by Kurdish People's Leader Mr Abdullah Öcalan. Mr Öcalan has a saying: 'I will neither deceive nor be deceived'. This is our slogan in this process. Everyone should work for peace. We will do our best to make the process a success."
