Trees cut down for 'National Garden'

MERSİN - Scores of trees were cut down in scope of the rehabilitation work carried out at the Mufti Stream to make a 'National Garden'.
 
The "Mersin National Garden" work continues on a 140 decare area on the former Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium area, which was demolished by the Housing Development Administration (TOKİ) in the Akdeniz District of Mersin. There was a tree massacre in the rehabilitation works carried out by the State Hydraulic Works (DSI) in the Müftü Stream located in the area of ​​the garden in question. The trees around the stream were cut down with heavy construction equipment.
 
 
IT WAS A MASSACRE
 
Stating that they quarrelled with the teams regarding the cutting of the trees, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Ecology Commission Spokesperson İhsan Derinöz said that he saw that the trees were being cut and he asked them why they were cutting the trees but the people there gave him contradictory information. Stating that they first told him it was the work of the Metropolitan Municipality and then later they said it was for the DSI, Derinöz said: "These trees are at least 80-100 years old. They were the lungs of that region. This was a massacre. We do not accept this. People of Mersin must be sensitive to this incident."
 
Stating that the trees were cut to build a 'National Garden' which was the election promise of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Derinöz said: "Which institution decided to cut these trees and with what authority? There are various types of trees here. 17 different bird species live here. There are blackbirds, warblers, sparrows, seagulls, pigeons. Besides the tree massacre, many bird species were also destroyed. Those who committed this massacre; we will adhere this massacre. "
