ANKARA - Criticizing Turkey's Civil Code, Edizer had called on men to marry a second woman "as Islam allows it."

 

University of Health Sciences (SBÜ) Gülhane Training and Research Hospital Deputy Chief Physician Ali Edizer has been dismissed from the profession over Twitter posts calling on men to marry a second woman.

 

Criticizing Turkey's Civil Code and the principle and practice of monogamy stipulated by the law, Edizer said that "a man could get a second spouse as Islam allowed it."

 

He was dismissed from his position at the hospital on Monday (October 5).

 

He was also dismissed from the profession "upon an instruction by Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca," yesterday (October 8).

 

The administrative investigation against Edizer is continuing, according to the report.

 

BACKGROUND

 

University of Health Sciences (SBÜ) Gülhane Training and Research Hospital (former GATA) Deputy Chief Physician Ali Edizer made a statement on social media and shared his views about Turkey's Civil Code as well as the principle and practice of monogamy stipulated by the law.

 

Indicating that "yet another marriage shattered due to cheating," Edizer alleged that "a man could get a second spouse as Islam allowed it."

 

Ali Edizer's remarks caused public outrage. In response to this outrage, he made another statement and defended what he had said.

 

Shortly afterward, it was announced that Dr. Ali Edizer was dismissed from his duty over his remarks.
