DİYARBAKIR – The name of the Özgür Gündem Newspaper, hung on a signboard  on the street where journalist Hafız Akdemir from the newspaper was murdered by the Hezbollah Contra in the Sur district of Diyarbakır was censored by the trustee.

 

The name of Akdemir who left home and was going to the newspaper in the street which used to be named Palu was given to the street by Sur Municipal Council on October 3, 2013. The mayor who changed the name of the street hung a signboard that read, "Hafız Akdemir who is known for the news he made about the extrajudicial executions, was murdered in this street by unknown assailants on June 1992.

 

The trustee who replaced elected Mayor Selçuk Mızraklı, removed the signboard and censored the name 'Özgür Gündem' and hung a new sign that reads, "Hafız Akdemir was killed on this street on June 8,1992 while he was going to the Diyarbakır office of the newspaper he worked for".

The gravestone of Özgür Gündem newspaper reporter Hafız Akdemir, located in Lice's Sîsê neighborhood in recent months. His family visiting his grave found out that his photo on the gravestone was removed.
