ANKARA - Peyas Co-Mayor Cengiz Dündar and Nusrat Akın have been released from prison.
Co-Mayor of Amed (Diyarbakır) Peyas (Kayapınar) Municipality Cengiz Dündar and Nusrat Akın, who were arrested on 30 November 2024 through an Ankara based investigation, were released yesterday upon their lawyers' objection to their detention. Dündar and Akın, who were held in Sincan Prison, left the prison late at night after the release decision. Members of Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), Association of Families of Prisoners and Convicts (TUHAYDER), Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) as well as Confederation of Public Laborer's Unions (KESK) Co-Chairs Ayfer Koçak and Ahmet Karagöz welcomed Dündar and Akın in front of the prison.
Making a short statement there, Dündar pointed out that there are still thousands of prisoners in prisons. Dündar said, "Especially the situation of ill prisoners is another dimension. Therefore, it is difficult to be happy and enjoy freedom in this atmosphere and climate. On the other hand, political genocide operations continue unabated. Our co-mayors and council members of Akdeniz Municipality were unjustly arrested. The political will of the people was once again usurped. This situation shows that antidemocratic practices in the country continue to deepen. However, there is a ray of hope. In the last period, there is a process that has not yet been named. There is a call for the opening of the democratic process in the person of Mr Abdullah Öcalan and the liberation of the peoples. I hope that this call will lead to the freedom of the peoples of Turkey."
