NEWS CENTER – Lokman Saman from Cukurova Association for Solidarity with Prisoners and Convicts (TUAY-DER), spoke about ongoing violations in prisons, especially regarding access to healthcare. Despite the ongoing Peace and Democratic Society Process, violations continue systematically in prisons. 

 

Saman said that prison administrations use disciplinary measures and release delays as tools of repression.  He said: “Healthcare rights are weaponized against prisoners. Many are denied access to infirmaries or have their medical requests delayed for months. Hospital referrals are frequently canceled, and prisoners suffer from water supply cuts in places like Tarsus and Antalya prisons during summer, leading to hygiene problems, especially in women’s prisons.”

 

‘PRISONERS MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE PROCESS’

 

Referring to messages from prisoners following Abdullah Ocalan’s call, Saman stressed: “Prisoners view this process as a new opportunity for peace and democratization in Turkey and the entire Middle East. They want to actively participate, organize society, and contribute to building a democratic society. Political prisoners, in particular, have been key contributors to this process and should not be excluded.”

 

LEGAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS AS FUNDAMENTALS

 

Saman emphasized the need for constitutional recognition of Kurdish identity and cultural rights, removal of obstacles, and strengthening political representation: “Kurdish identity must no longer be treated as second-class. Local governments and parliaments must have a say, and existing barriers should be lifted. Prison monitoring commissions must be truly independent to effectively prevent violations.”

 

PRISONERS ARE NOT JUST VICTIMS BUT KEY ACTORS

 

Saman concluded: “Political prisoners are not only victims; they are essential actors in the Peace and Democratic Society Process. Their role in building peace and democracy must be acknowledged and empowered.”
