ANTALYA - The release of ill prisoner İdris Başaran was postponed for 6 months due to his refusal to “remorse”. Brother Lokman Başaran said: “There should be a reaction against the unlawful situation.”

İdris Başaran, a seriously ill prisoner of 30 years in Antalya Döşemealtı Type S Closed Prison, completed the execution of his sentence on July 19. However, his release was prevented for 6 months because he refused to accept the imposition of “remorse”. Detained in 1994 in Adana and sentenced to life imprisonment by the State Security Court (DGM), Başaran was imprisoned in Konya, Kürkçüler, Ceyhan, Sêrt (Siirt), Mûş, Silifke, Çankırı, Kandıra, Bandırma and Bursa. Başaran was last transferred to Antalya Döşemealtı Type S Closed Prison on May 24, 2022.

HAD A STROKE

Başaran, who suffered a partial stroke in 2006, is also battling stage four cancer. In addition to cancer, Başaran also suffers from chronic bronchitis, panic attacks, gastritis, arrhythmia, FMF (familial mediterranean fever, a recurrent painful inflammatory attack in the chest, abdomen or joints), epilepsy, goiter, herniated discs, asthma and COPD. Başaran's older brother Lokman Başaran drew attention to his brother's health condition and the increasing violations of rights in prisons, saying that the practices are caused by lack of reaction.

'WILL YOU GO TO THE MOUNTAINS WHEN YOU ARE RELEASED?

Başaran stated that his brother was taken to Akdeniz University Hospital 4 days ago and that the family was not informed about this situation. Başaran stated that there is an attempt to create a pressure network on the society through rights violations in prisons and said: “There is an approach that intends to break the bond between the prisoners in prison and the society, especially with the policy of isolation and isolation. Especially for a few years now, there has been a very serious policy of isolation and isolation in prisons. The main aim is to completely break the bond of communication between society and the people imprisoned in the dungeon. They are in the system and understanding of psychologically capturing the prisoners. When this is the case, very serious problems inevitably arise. These people have been in prison for a long time and they have health problems. There are also legal problems. You keep a person in prison for 30 years and you ask them the question, 'Are you going to go to the mountains when you are released? This is such an absurd question. Or, 'what are you going to do outside, are you going to go to your family?’ And at the end they ask 'do you regret it?’ There is a complete understanding of surrendering, regretting, breaking his will.”

'IT IS CAUSED BY INACTION'

Başaran emphasized that prisoners have a strong belief and will against these practices. Başaran said: “The Prison Monitoring Board uses the following sentence in its reasoned decision; ‘There is no disciplinary punishment for İdris Başaran that has not been lifted.’ It is arbitrariness to reflect a person who has no disciplinary penalty as a dangerous person to the society, to prevent the release of the person and extend it for 6 months. If there is such an apparatus of oppression, exploitation and persecution, it stems from social weakness. While the policies of isolation and arbitrary practices are obvious, the public should be much more sensitive to the dungeons. This situation can only end if the society shows solidarity and reaction against all oppression, arbitrary practices and unlawful approaches.”
