DİYARBAKIR - Protesting the removal of the road signs written in Kurdish in the Çaldıran district of Van, Kurdish Language Platform Spokesperson İrfan Söner said: "We will hang the signs they removed back to our streets."

 

The removal of the Kurdish road signs by the trustee appointed to replace the administration of elected Democratic Regions Party (DBP) caused reactions. While the trustee did not make any statements about replacing the Kurdish signs of Selik, Sêgira, Kurdoxlan, Hevîdan, Neçîrcan, Kurtikê Jêr, Kurtikê Jor, Çaçur, Teqiz , Selexane, Kel and Mitkulî, with Turkish ones, Kurdish Language Platform İrfan Söner said that the reason for the removal of the signs is purely based on historical Turkish pressure on the Kurds. 

 

Stating that  a language spoken by 25 million people does not have a constitutional guarantee, Söner said the language institutions that is not granted a legal guarantee are being closed by the government. Emphasizing that they can't even stand a road sign in Kurdish, Söner said: "They are afraid of our language, our culture. Because both are very strong in the face of oppression. We will hang back those signs to the roads, neighborhoods, mountains, plains and streets. Everyone should know this well."

 

Expressing the necessity of developing a defense reflex despite the attacks against Kurdish, Söner added that every attack will backfire thanks to this reflex.
