The trial of Onur Gencer, who murdered Deniz Poyraz during the armed attack on the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) İzmir Provincial Organization, is being held at the İzmir 6th High Criminal Court. Hundreds of people who came to the Izmir Courthouse in the morning called for the murderer and the forces behind him to be revealed. Lawyers and hundreds of people were kept waiting in front of the courtroom, which started late because the hall was not ready. 

 

Deniz Poyraz's family and lawyers were present at the hearing. While more than 500 lawyers came to participate in the case, which took place in the conference room in the Bayraklı Courthouse, some of the lawyers and the audience were not allowed into the courtroom. HDP Co-Chair Pervin Buldan, HDP MPs, Republican People's Party (CHP) Vice President Gülizar Biçer Karaca, CHP MPs, Turkish Workers' Party (TIP) MPs, Danish Parliament MPs Lars Aslan Rasmussen, Soren Sondergaard, heads of bar associations of 29 provinces and representatives of political parties are at monitoring the hearing. 

 

Most of the people and some lawyers who came to the court house in solidarity were not allowed in the hearing despite the hearing was moved to a bigger hall. HDP, its components and numerous women's organisations and many bar association asked to be added to the lawsuit.  

 

MURDERER GENCER WAS BROUGHT TO THE COURT ROOM

 

The murderer Onur Gencer was brought to the court room. Killer Gencer is being tried with aggravated life imprisonment and up to 7 years in prison for the crimes of "deliberate killing", "violating workplace immunity" and "damaging the building, facility or property used by political parties or professional organizations".

 

POLICE WANTED TO RECORD THE COURT ROOM

 

A police officer tried to videotape the people in the court room which caused the reaction of the lawyers. The police was made to delete the video upon the request of the lawyers.

 

A BRAWL BROKE OUT

 

The killer Gencer was accompanied by the gendermerie to use the restroom. Gencer laughed at the people following the hearing as he was walking by them which caused a brawl broke out in the hall. The people at court started shouting slogans saying the killer will be held to account.

 

HDP Group Deputy Chairperson Meral Danış Beştaş reacted to the fact that the family was seated too close to the accused and he was escorted to the felon's dock walking by the family while going out. After the reaction of the people in the hall, the fact that the defendant laughed at the people was recorded in the minutes and the head of the court stated that they would ensure that the entrance and exit of the accused will be made through another door.
