ISTANBUL - May Day rally started in Kadıköy with the participation of tens of thousands of people.
A rally led by the Confederation of Progressive Unions (DISK), Confederation of Public Laborers' Unions (KESK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) is being held in Kadıköy, Istanbul for the 1 May Worker's Day. Organised under the slogan "We will win for labour, peace, democracy and justice", the rally started after tens of thousands of workers and labourers marched towards the area.
Ignoring the rainy and cold weather, the workers frequently chanted slogans such as "Shoulder to shoulder against fascism", "Jin, jiyan, azadî (Woman, life, freedom)", "Rights, law, justice", "There is no salvation, either all together or none of us" and "We will bleed if we resist". Photographs of arrested journalists were also displayed in the area and the slogan "Free press cannot be silenced" was chanted.
The rally started with a minute of silence. Then Ruhi Su Friends Choir took the stage.
