ANKARA – Journalist Huseyin Aykol, who has developed a new bacterial infection in his lungs, is set to receive PEG treatment, doctors said.
Aykol has been undergoing treatment at Sincan Training and Research Hospital since suffering a brain haemorrhage at his home in Ankara on 14 October. After two surgeries, he has remained in the intensive care unit due to a lung infection, and medical staff have reported the emergence of a new bacterium in his lungs.
Doctors stated that Aykol will undergo a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (a procedure in which a tube is placed directly into the stomach to provide nutrition for patients unable to eat orally). They added that the procedure is planned to take place by 12 December.
Highlighting that the infection persists, doctors noted that Aykol experiences tachycardia when he develops a fever and that he has been unable to regain consciousness despite not being given sedation. They also reported that Aykol has become severely underweight and shows significant muscle weakness.
